Farmhouse with Barn
- 18 STEPS
- 41 WOOD PIECES
- NO GLUE
- ABOUT 4.8 IN TALL
Before you start
- Lay your pieces out engraved side up. Each step shows the pieces it uses, drawn the way they lie on the table.
- No glue and no tools. The tabs are snug on purpose: press evenly and work each joint in a little at a time. Never force one corner.
- Engraved sides always face out. Left and right always mean as you look at the front of the house, the side with the door.
- The vellum is the thin paper that makes the windows glow. Each piece is the shape of its window or door frame, just a little smaller, so they are easy to match. If your vellum is still on its little card, press each piece out gently when its window goes on.
- Painting? Paint the pieces before you build. Keep the paint thin on the tabs and out of the slots, or the joints get too tight.
How a window goes on
Dress the walls flat on the table before they go up. Every layered window and door goes on in the same order, from the bottom up. Here is one window, piece by piece, with the new piece in gold.
1. SillPush the sill's two end tabs into the pair of slots under the window.
2. VellumLay the vellum on the wall, its bottom edge against the sill.
3. FrameSet the frame over it so its bottom tabs drop into the sill's notches.
4. HeadPress the head on over the frame's top tabs, its own tabs into the slots above.
Step 1: Farmhouse windows and door

Lay the farmhouse front wall flat on the table, engraved side up. Each window: its sill into the wall, the vellum against the sill, the frame into the sill's notches, then the head over the frame's top tabs. The sill and the head are the same shape, so either one does either job. The doors go on the same way, on their step with a head over the top.

Lay the barn front wall flat, engraved side up. The step, the doors' vellum against it, then the doors into the step's notches. The sign shelf goes over the doors' top tabs. Stand the sign board in the shelf's other two notches and press the cornice on over its top tabs. Push the wreath peg through the doors and the wall from the front, then hang the wreath on it.

Lay the floor flat. It carries both buildings, with a tealight opening in the middle of each.

The farmhouse's left side wall, the one with the big opening, is shared with the barn. It goes on first: push its two tabs straight down into the two slots in the barn's part of the floor.

Slide the front wall in from the front: its bottom tabs drop into the floor's front notches and its corner tabs go into the shared wall.

The back wall slides in from the back the same way.

The right side wall slides in from its side and finishes the farmhouse. It meets two walls at once: seat one corner, then the other.
Pieces for this stepRIGHT SIDE WALL Step 8: Roof, right side first

The right roof panel goes on first (the one with the chimney slots). Its slots drop over the tabs along the tops of the front and back walls.
Pieces for this stepRIGHT ROOF PANEL Step 9: Roof, left side

Then the left panel. Its top edge runs on past the ridge and laps over the top of the right panel, so the ridge closes tight with no gap for the light.

Build the chimney off the house first. Start with the tall wall, then slide the two angled side walls in from the sides, brick faces out, sloped edges toward the bottom. Slide the short wall in to close the box. Then set the chimney on the roof: its tabs go into the roof slots and the sloped edges sit flat on the roof.

The porch is built as one piece in front of the house. Stand the two posts up, slide the porch deck up onto their bottoms and drop the porch roof onto their tops. Then push the whole porch into the front wall: the deck slides in under the door's step, and the deck's and the roof's tabs go into their slots at once.

The skirts slide in under the porch deck's edges, the front one from the front and each side one from its side, and tab up into it.

Push each icicle trim half's tabs up into the row of slots near the front edge of the roof. The two halves meet at the peak.

The barn's two end walls stand on the floor with no floor tabs. Push the barn front wall's corner tabs sideways into the front column of slots in the shared wall, then the barn back wall into the back column.

The barn's outer side wall slides in from the side: the pockets at its ends go over both barn walls' tabs and its bottom tabs drop into the floor's outer notches.
Pieces for this stepBARN SIDE WALL Step 16: Barn roof, inner panel first

The barn roof panel with the short eave goes on first, on the farmhouse side: its edge just butts up to the farmhouse wall.
Pieces for this stepBARN INNER ROOF PANEL Step 17: Barn roof, outer panel

Then the outer panel. Its top edge laps over the top of the inner panel at the ridge.
Pieces for this stepBARN OUTER ROOF PANEL Step 18: Light it up

Switch on the LED tealight, set it on the table, and set the farmhouse down over it so the light comes up through the opening in the farmhouse floor. It lights the barn too, through the open shared wall. A second tealight under the barn's opening makes the barn brighter. Then drape the fairy lights over the roofs and switch them on too. Use LED lights only, never a real candle.
